Question by Youn Song: Do you have to pay to adopt a dog on Petfinder? What are the steps you have to take?
Im thinking of adopting 2 baby Yorkshire terriers on Petfinder. I checked multiple websites and they had many varieties of answers; $ 200 fee, and so on.
I would also like to know the steps on adopting a dog.
I thought that you didn’t have to pay because in my local animal shelters when you adopt a dog you don’t have to pay.
The dogs are bonded together so you can buy them together.

We don’t know the answer to that.
You have to contact the Rescue organization that has the dogs you want to adopt, and ask them these questions. There is an email contact on the dogs Pet Finder profile.
Well, contact the people that put the puppies up.
yes, petfinders is usually a pet for sale even if it states its for adoption. becareful of the scams for free terriers on there you may notice there are several some from canada some from africa and california US.. we posted on here some of those scams a week or two ago.
FEEs are to pay for cost of pup or dog to abreeder and if it is a shelter or rescue dog then they usualy have a fee of 100.00+ this helps to off set costs of the vaccinations, care, food, spay/neuter surgery they received while in shelters. however better to adopt a shelter or rescue and save its life into a forever home.
probably. it would make sense.
Petfinder is the listing agent for shelters and rescues — you don’t get a dog from Petfinder, you contact the shelter or rescue that has listed the dog and then follow their instructions for applying for the dog.
Of course you “pay to adopt a dog” – what in the world do you think rescues and shelters use to vet their dogs? They need adoption fees to help rescue more dogs and to vet the ones they have.’
Note: Sweetie – you are seriously mistaken if you think “you don’t have to pay” at your local shelter. You pay an adoption fee, buy a license, etc.
What do you think shelters and rescues run on – the government doesn’t support them, adoption fees are needed to run them.
Also, I cannot imagine ANY rescue or shelter that can possibly adopt out 2
yorkies for 200.- Costs FAR more to vaccinate them, spay/neuter, etc.
You are being a bit naive.
Also wish you would stop saying “buy”, you don’t buy dogs from shelters or rescues – you ADOPT them, and no shelter or rescue will adopt to anyone under 18, our rescue’s minimum age is 25, and that’s to responsible, approved adoptive homes.
Whole point is to make sure the adopters can give the dogs a good home, keep them their whole lifespan, and AFFORD to vet them, plus keep them on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Takes a lot more than “wanting” a dog – you have to be able to care for it properly.
As someone pointed out, not likely to get 2 dogs together unless they are older, bonded and need to stay together.
The dog’s profile on Petfinder has a link to a page about the shelter/rescue they are from, where you will find adoption fee, procedure, etc.
The adoption fee varies from shelter to shelter or rescue to rescue. Some shelters- usually pounds or city/county shelters- have very low costs- such as 65 dollars. Privately funded shelters and rescue have much higher prices- anywhere from 100 to 500 dollars and up.
The adoption procedure also varies. However at most shelters, you first see the dog of your choice outside of the main kennel room. Then you can apply to adopt the dog, and you will usually have a short interview. Then you can fill out an adoption contract, pay the fee, and bring your dog home. If it is a private rescue that works through foster homes, you must contact the rescue- usually by email or by phone- to fill out a usually extensive application. Some require home checks and multiple non-family references. Afterwards you can arrange a date to meet the dog, usually at the foster home. Then you can adopt the dog.
Without knowing anything about the organization these yorkies are currently at, we can’t say exactly what the fee or the procedure will be like. To find out, either check out the organization’s Petfinder page or website. The adoption procedure will not be too in-depth online, so call them or stop by for a visit for a better idea of what to expect.
Good luck! Also, adopting 2 puppies at once may not be the best idea. Housebreaking, training, socializing, etc 2 puppies at once will be a handful, and you’ll have to deal with twice the chewing, twice the accidents, twice the vet bills, twice the supplies and food, etc. If I’m not mistaken most shelters/rescues won’t let you adopt 2 dogs at once unless they came in together or are really bonded. Usually they have to be adults for this to count, since litters of puppies do come in together. Adopting is a great idea though, so good luck!
Yes you have to pay.. all shelters and rescues have an adoption fee.
Petfinder itself does not do anything with the adoptions. Petfinder is only a website where shelters and rescues can list their dogs.. you have to contact the shelter/rescue that has those dogs to find out their fees and to find out their adoption policies.
