Does Petfinder ship dogs if YOU pay for the shipping?

Question by Brynzie843: Does Petfinder ship dogs if YOU pay for the shipping?
I’m thinking of getting a dog, and i found one that seems very nice on Petfinder. I live in New Jersey and the dog is at a Shelter in Georgia. I don’t have time to go all the way down there, or have the patience to spend 8 hours in a car with a dog. Can i have the dog brought to me, or will i have to stand the 8 hour car ride with him?

Look closer to home. most adoption places wont accept people from out of state or a certain amount of miles away. and i’m almost 100% sure that you have to go meet the dog and bring it home. they want to see how you will interact with the dog and vice versa.

Perfinder is jsut a listing company. They are not connected in anyway to the shelters and rescues that list pets with them.

You would need to contact the group that actually has the dog to see if they can help you transport it.

But call them and see, you never know.

“I don’t have time to go all the way down there, or have the patience to spend 8 hours in a car with a dog. ” Then you aren’t getting the dog.

Petfinder is just an ad site for shelters and rescues that is all. They do not handle adoptions what so ever.

If you can’t get off your duff and the shelter/rescues do not have a volunteer willing to transport the dog you are SOL.

That is of course if they adopt out of state.

What on earth? You can’t have dog shipped, it’s ALIVE.

Well if Petfinder won’t ship the dog for you, contact the folks at Google or Yahoo and see if they will.

In case you were not aware, petfinder is just a listing site. Then different organizations list their dogs on the site.

Most rescues will NOT place dogs outside their area, as they have no way to do home checks.

If they would be inclined to do so, someone saying that its not worth 8 hours of their life to go pick the dog up would be a red flag that the person is not a good candidate to have one of their dogs.

When one owns pets, it is not always conveniant and sometimes we have to arrange our schedule and our lives around them.

It’s going to depend on the individual shelter you’d be adopting the dog from. Petfinder is just a general site that multiple shelters and rescues use to post their animals that are available, they don’t actually have anything to do with the adoptions.

You need to contact the shelter in Georgia and find out if they do transports anywhere close to you, or if they even allow out of state adoptions to begin with. Different shelters have different requirements and funds to do things like that.

You Can have the dog shipped. you just have to go on there contact Information and ask them if they ship dogs and they will probably say yes. if you pay for shipping i think you will have to.

sounds like a real problem … if you can’t stand eight hours in a car with him, don’t get him…he’s not he one. Get a dog you can meet and relate to. They have feelings too. Meet and then decide if it’s a fit.

call the shelter in georgia and see how they prefer to transfer their dogs that distance

Petfinder doesn’t ship dogs because petfinder doesn’t sell or adopt out dogs. Petfinder is a place to advertise available pets. I doubt a shelter would ship a dog but you have nothing to lose by asking them. Most shelters screen adopting families before letting them adopt a pet. Also they don’t usually adopt to people who live far away because the adoption contract usually states that the pet be returned to the same shelter if things don’t work out.

Petfinder is just an on-line listing service where shelters and rescues can show animals that are available for adoption. They are similar to the classified section of a newspaper. They don’t arrange adoptions or anything else – they just run the ads.

In order to adopt a pet, you have to contact the shelter or rescue who listed the animal. You will have to be approved before you can adopt. In 99.9% of the cases – you have to actually meet the animal, and the shelter staff.

If you don’t have the time or patience to go through proper adoption procedures and transport the animal yourself, you probably don’t have the time or patience for the dog, either. Pets aren’t merchandise, and adoption is taken seriously. They want animals to go to good homes, not someone who isn’t even willing to make an effort.

“stand the 8 hour car ride with him” ???

It doesn’t even sound like you enjoy dogs.

You would most likely have to talk to that shelter to find out the answer you are looking for.

  12. rescue member says:

Petfinder is not a company, it’s a referral source for dogs in rescues and shelters.

The rescues and shelters have their hands full trying to help save dogs, if you don’t have time or inclination to drive 8 hours to pick up a dog you want to adopt, you don’t really want the dog.

I am with a rescue and foster. I’ve had many adoptive families drive 2 days and stay in a hotel overnight to pick up a foster, that’s what people who really love and want a dog do.

  13. BYBS sell sick puppies for crack says:

petfinder is NOT responsible for the adoption of the dogs.

You have to contact the individual shelter or rescue that has the dog. Most shelters/rescues will NOT ship animals.. some wont even adopt out of state! Odds are, if you want the dog, you will have to drive down and get it.

awwww dont ship the dog. that is really not fun for them at all. i would just take the 8 hour car ride. its only 8 hours from your life for a friend you will have for a loooongg time. when we got our dog (it was only 2 hour drive) but he warmed up to us right away and behaved perfectly all the way home. it really isnt that bad. and take some one with you to keep the doggy company while you are driving. good luck :)
