if you have your pet on agressive then change it to defensive.. that way it only attacks when you do or when you get attacked

Before sending in a pet check out your enviroment. Are you planning on attacking a group or a single monster? Also are they agro or are they neutral (can you walk up to them without being attacked). Also you wanna check if they are humanoids, cus if they are humanoids they will probably call out for help or run in fear when their health is low. If they run in fear when their health is low they will run to other humanoids of the same type and they will also agro you to help out the feared one.
Also put points in demonology (or beastmastery if you are a hunter) to make your pet stronger. Also if you are a hunter make sure you lay a frost trap if you are fighting more then one enemy. Warlocks should always have a healthstone.
If it gets too tough to handle try to feign death with your hunter, with a warlock you can try to run, or if you have soulstone put on yourself you can die and ressurect once the enemies are gone.
Also watch out for patrols, be sure to pull the enemies to a spot that you know is safe.
Well Pets Have 3 Stances.
1.Aggressive (Attacks)
2.Defensive (Defualt + Best for Walking)
3.Passive (Still)
In the aggressive stance your pet will attack anything it sees that is somewhat near.
In the defensive stance your pet will only attack when commanded to or if the player (you) are attacked.
In the Passive stance is when your pet will not attack no matter what.
Really that is all you need to know, Unless you mean attacks.
Pet spells on their action bar, if highlighted with a yellow ant trail means that it is set to use at a good time, leave these on default in my opinion.
Have a great day!
Those are all good tips, I woudl also say that if u got BM spec, your pet can easily survive against 3-4 enemies of your level. So let him fight, keep him healed, and make sure you and he are attacking the same target and you would be amazed at how much abuse he can take.
When u are fighting mobs that flee, be ready to either pull your pet back (ctrl+2) or have a stun ready.
Also if you get misdirect (I forget what level u get that), you can keep your pet on passive at your side, put misdirect on your pet and shoot the mob. That brings the mob to your pet, when he is about to attack your pet, put on defensive mode.
